Lesson 1: Difficult letters

Other letters are a bit more difficult, but as you can see only a few will need some practice:

RussianEnglishSounds like...
Еyeye like in yes
Ёyoyo like in yolk
Жzhs like in pleasure
Уuoo like in pool
Цcts like in meets
Чchch like in chair
Шshsh like in shadow
Щsoft shsounds like sh but softer
Ъ-hard sign which is very rare
Ы-sounds like i in ill
Ь-soft sign - softens the letter before it
Эee like in leg
Юyoou like in universe
Яyaya like in yard

Now, view these letters in following words, and learn the words.

ЕВРОПАEUROPE
ЛЁДICE
ЖУРНАЛMAGAZINE
УЛИЦАSTREET
ЦВЕТОКFLOWER
ЧАЙTEA
ШКОЛАSCHOOL
ЖЕНЩИНАWOMAN
ОБЪЕЗДDETOUR
МУЗЫКАMUSIC
НОЧЬNIGHT
ЭКОНОМИСТECONOMIST
ЮГSOUTH
ЯБЛОКОAPPLE

Although Russian words are easier to spell than english words, you will nevertheless need to learn the spelling for each word. Especialy pay attention to the position of soft sign ('Ь') and don't confuse 'Ы' sign with 'И'.
One other thing you should be aware of is that in printed text Russians often print letter 'E' instead of the letter 'Ё'. It is assumed that letter 'E' stands for letter 'Ё', and is read just as if 'Ё' is printed. It might be pretty confusing for a student of the Russian language. Why they do that I don't have a clue, but it is another reason to learn the spelling of words because 'yo' sounds very differently from 'ye'.
